On 10-26-08, at approximately 3:50 am, Conroe Police officers responded to a reported auto/pedestrian fatality accident in the 12000 block of West Davis Street (Hwy 105 West).
While enroute to the scene, officers learned that Meghann Marie Smith, 09-26-90, and Lance Asa Barton, 04-27-89, had apparently stopped to change a flat tire on their vehicle. A 2004 Yukon driven by Catherine Roberts, 6-14-62, apparently failed to maintain a single lane and struck both Smith and Barton, ultimately causing the death of Smith and injuring Barton.
Initial reports indicate Roberts apparently stopped near Smith's body and exited her vehicle, returned to her vehicle, and then fled the scene. A description of the suspect vehicle had been broadcast to officers, and Conroe Police patrol officers located the suspect vehicle near the intersection of FM 2854 and Loop 336. Roberts was interviewed at the scene and officers determined Roberts appeared intoxicated. State law mandates that drivers involved in fatality accidents submit to a blood test and a blood sample was obtained from Roberts at a local hospital.
Roberts was arrested for one count of Felony Failure to Stop and Render Aid and one count of Intoxication Manslaughter and was transported to the Montgomery County Jail. Bond was set at a total of $50,000.
