According to police, the young couple’s vehicle broke down on Highway 105 at Sapp Road.
Police say Meghann Marie Smith was watching for cars when an SUV came over the hill and struck her. Her boyfriend, Lance Barton, was able to jump out of the way.
Investigators say a drunk driver hit Smith.
The female driver, Catherine Roberts, stopped to ask what had happened. Police say she fled the scene when the victim’s boyfriend told her that she had killed his girlfriend.
Conroe police were able to stop her several miles from the scene and arrested her.
Roberts has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.

I believe there're many reckless drivers out there in Houston, some of them are from neighbor City or States. I encountered this morning when some reckless drivers did not turn on signal light when they cut in front of me. How can these people get the license to drive? As one of the US Armed Forces memebers, we are not allowed people to treat us like this. Pay more respect, dude! Don't think you are tough!
Just one more thing, she was watching our for Lance, and pushed him out of the way..she saved his life, that's pretty brave to me. I'd like to see one of ya'll do that.
I don't even know where to begin with this message. I honestly cannot believe the comments some of these people have left. It scares me to know that there are actually people like this. Only her closest friends and family know what she was doing that night, she was not leaving a bar drunk nor was she driving her car. So both of those statements are wrong. And yes it may be clear I am a teenager but the things being said by the "adults" sound childish to me by getting mad at us defending our best friend because she's six feet under and can't say a word. I know she's happy in heaven and that's why I find somewhat peace when I read these awful things because I know she's content where she is. She's at home, while we're down here trying to make people realize that bad things happen and we're all human but to throw rude accusations at us like that is just heartless. But aside from all this we have lost five other people in the last three weeks from our school so give us a break if we get a little mad when we read stuff saying she was "stupid" or "playing" on 105. Just think of others and what we're going through before you comment on things that most of you know nothing about.
Meghann-I went to your cross yesterday, there is so much more stuff there from everyone. I know you would like it. I love you and miss you very much.
another child is dead! shi... world we live in when you cant even chang a tire without getting killed !!!
Stupid Decisions, stupid results. What bar did she leave, they should be held accountable also for letting her leave drunk. They should have called her a cab.
Excuse me, make that Ms. Roberts.
Ms. Smith shouldn't have been drinking and driving. That seems pretty simple! Then she left the scene.
No comments were made saying that what happened to Ms.Smith was not a tragedy. Alot of comments that were made questioning the fact that there may have been negligence on both parties parts have rubbed people the wrong way because most of these people have personal relationships with Ms. Smith.
As I stated last week in response to another story, the comments made just show what type of sick and cruel world we live in. Not only has a young life been lost but the person driving the car has to live with her mistake as well.RIP meghann.
Are you kidding me? How do you get hit by a car while watching for cars? I've been wasted before, but never wasted enough to see a car coming directly for me, while my sole objective was to watch out for one, and let it strike me.
